Agentic AI
What is Agentic AI?
Agentic AI refers to AI systems that not only respond to individual requests but also independently plan and execute multi-step tasks to achieve a goal.
The difference from traditional chatbots is that an agent performs actions in a loop: understand the goal, create a plan, use tools (e.g., web search, execute code, edit files, call APIs), evaluate results, and adjust the plan as needed until the goal is achieved. A normal chatbot only returns text, while an agent takes action in the real world.
Typical characteristics include: autonomy (makes its own interim decisions without every step being predetermined), use of tools (access to external tools rather than just trained knowledge), multi-step processing (breaks down complex tasks into sub-steps), and often a certain degree of memory across the course of the task.
Examples include systems that independently conduct research and generate a report based on it, write code and test it until it works, or—as I do in this coworking mode—read and edit files and coordinate tasks across multiple steps.
